Mark Pombo’s Horrific Road America Crash: Video
Posted on , by Nick Preston
We all know that racing is much safer than it used to be. Whilst speeds have increased substantially, cars have gotten stronger, tyres are much more durable and im positive that many life’s have been saved due to improved safety equipment such as seats, helmets, roll cages and fire suits.
However, things still go wrong, and almost always when high speeds are involved. This was the case last Friday, during a practice run for the upcoming Continental Tyre Sports Car Series race at Wisconsin’s Road America circuit.
Mark Pombo experienced a braking issue with his Kinetic Racing Kia Forte Koupe whilst coming through Kettle Bottoms and into Canada Corner. It’s clear in the video that the car begins to slow down, but nowhere near enough.
Incredibly, the driver manages to squeeze through two other cars, before sliding sideways into the barrier at very high speeds. Pombo was airlifted from the crash, and his health remained a mystery throughout much of Friday’s practice session.
Thankfully, we can report that Pombo is recovering well in hospital, which is amazing considering the severity of the crash. He suffered a broken collar bone, broken ribs, a broken jaw and a concussion in the accident.
We send Mark our best wishes and hope he makes a speed recovery.
